Sisters, Umrah during Ramadan is an incredible blessing — but it comes with unique considerations. This guide addresses the questions women ask most, from practical to fiqh-related, so you can focus on your worship.
Mahram Requirements (2026 Update)
Great news: Saudi Arabia now allows women of ALL ages to perform Umrah without a mahram, as long as they travel with an organized group or another woman. This applies to tourist visas and Umrah visas. Solo travel is also permitted for women over 45. However, having a mahram is still recommended for safety and ease, especially during Ramadan crowds.
What to Wear
Unlike men, women don't wear special Ihram clothing. Requirements: loose, non-transparent clothing covering everything except face and hands. Recommendations: light colors (black absorbs heat), breathable cotton or linen, comfortable abayas, flat shoes. During Ihram: no niqab touching the face (use a cap with hanging fabric instead), no gloves. Your face and hands should be uncovered during rituals.
If Your Period Starts
This is many sisters' biggest worry. If menstruation begins: You can enter the Haram (scholarly difference exists, but majority allow it). You CANNOT perform Tawaf or Sa'i until purified. You CAN make dua, dhikr, and sit in the Haram. If your period starts mid-Umrah: complete Sa'i if you've done Tawaf (Sa'i doesn't require purity). Wait until pure to complete Tawaf if you haven't. Don't stress — Allah knows your intention.
Women's Facilities at the Haram
Women's prayer areas are on every floor, usually behind the men's sections. The new expansion has excellent women's facilities. Bathrooms are clean and well-maintained. There are women-only Zamzam stations. During Ramadan, women's areas fill up fast — arrive early for Taraweeh. The rooftop often has more space for sisters.
Sister-Specific Tips
Pack period supplies from home — familiar brands are hard to find. Bring a prayer dress that's easy to put on (one-piece). Stay near the edge of crowds if you feel uncomfortable with pushing. The inner Tawaf circle is often harder for women — outer circles are wider and calmer. Network with other sisters at your hotel — having companions makes everything easier.
