Your first Umrah during Ramadan should be a beautiful experience — not a stressful one. Here are the mistakes I see first-time pilgrims make repeatedly, and how to avoid them.
1. Arriving During the Last 10 Nights
Many first-timers want to catch Laylatul Qadr. Understandable — but doing your FIRST Umrah during the most crowded week is overwhelming. Instead: arrive in the first 10 days, complete your Umrah peacefully, then spend the last 10 nights purely in worship.
2. Not Resting Before Umrah
You just flew 10+ hours, you're fasting, you're jet-lagged — and you want to immediately do Tawaf? Bad idea. Rest for at least a few hours. Eat well at Suhoor and Iftar. Your Umrah will be more meaningful when you're not exhausted.
3. Forgetting a Dua List
You're at the Kaaba, the most powerful place for dua, and your mind goes blank. Write your duas down BEFORE you travel. Health, family, forgiveness, guidance — all of it. Read from your phone or a paper. There's no prize for memorizing.
4. Wearing New Shoes
New shoes + 10km walking daily = blisters by day 2. Wear shoes you've already broken in. Sandals are often better than closed shoes for the heat. And bring blister plasters just in case.
5. Not Drinking Enough Water
Between Iftar and Suhoor, you have about 10 hours to hydrate. Most people don't drink enough and wonder why they have headaches and fatigue. Aim for 2-3 liters. Zamzam is abundant — use it.
6. Pushing Through Crowds Aggressively
Ramadan crowds test everyone's patience. But pushing, shoving, or getting angry invalidates the spiritual benefit of your worship. Stay calm. If someone pushes you, forgive them. This is part of the test. The Prophet ﷺ said Hajj mabroor (accepted) has no reward except Paradise — don't ruin it with bad behavior.
7. Spending All Night at the Haram Every Night
Noble intention, unsustainable execution. By day 5 you're a zombie. The Prophet ﷺ specifically intensified worship in the LAST 10 nights — not all 30. Pace yourself. Get proper sleep in the first 20 days. Save your energy for when it counts most.
